Yaskell Your skills: Advanced (many years) Date/time of observation: November 10, 2010; c. 0450 UT Location of site: Mount Holly, Vermont USA (Lat 43.44 N, Elev 1666 ft) Site classification: Rural Sky darkness: 1 Seeing: 7-8 (?) <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)> Moon presence: Minor - crescent or far from object Instrument: 12.5 inch truss mount Dobsonian-Newtonian reflector (handmade, German: Brennweite 312mm, F4.1) Magnification: x48 ; x76; x 153 Filter(s): Lumicon Deep Sky Object(s): NGC 2841 Category: External galaxy. Class: Sb Constellation: Ursa Major Data: mag 9? 10? size > ` 10 - 20 (?) (more than `10) Position: RA 9hrs: DEC + 51: Description: Very visible if faint but easily found if identifying Talitha (Iota Ursae Majoris) then slewing over and up a bit across from Theta Ursae Majoris. An elongated smokey streak at x48, N-S, with no detail. At x76 you start to see the brightness, especially w/ averted vision. There is the brighter bulge at this point,S. Some view of the spacing between arms is seen to W of bulge. The rest streaks N. Not much effect from Deep Sky Filter: just brings out background light. At x153 not much more detail made out than at x76. No sign of much symmetry. -- ** This observing log was submitted via the IAAC Web form: www.visualdeepsky.org/enter-log.html From anonymous at u15354731.onlinehome-server.com Fri Dec 17 07:50:30 2010 From: anonymous at u15354731.onlinehome-server.com (anonymous at u15354731.onlinehome-server.com) Date: Fri, 17 Dec 2010 12:50:30 -0000 Subject: (IAAC) Obj: M 97, M108 - Inst: 12.5 Inch (brennweite) F / 4.1 Newtonian Dobsonian reflector (handmade) Message-ID: <20101201172644.29205.qmail@u15354731.onlinehome-server.com> ---- Observation Poster: Steven H. Planetary nebula. Class: Constellation: Ursa Major Data: mag c. 11 size Position: RA 11: DEC +55: Description: Pick these two up in the same field with the 42 mm (c. 2-inch) diameter lens by GSO. The seeing is exceptional for this latitude and time of night (c. 11:30 PM EST). M97 is at the top of my view, showing its round face like a smudge of faint white dust with no other detail. A little below it runs the gash of M108, also like a faint white smudge, both at the same (?) magnitude. A small star is equidistant between the galaxy and planetary. The view is soon occluded by high thin clouds, blanking out the view entirely. -- ** This observing log was submitted via the IAAC Web form: www.visualdeepsky.org/enter-log.html
