Class: Constellation: Vir Data: mag size Position: RA : DEC : Description: NGC5740; Mag 11.9, Size 2.0' X 1.0', RA 14:44.5, DEC +01:41 A faint, uniform oval halo which is aligned nearly N-S.. It shows slight, gradual, diffuse brightening toward the core. Steadily visible with averted vision at 128x, it was best seen at 193x and began to fade into the background at 257x. NGC5738, plotted ~10' to the SW, was suspected at 128x but could not be confirmed. NGC5746 lies 15' NE. NGC5746; Mag 10.3, Size 5.0' X 1.0', RA 14:45, DEC +01:57 A splinter shaped halo which is elongated nearly N-S.. It is slightly wider in the center and tapers toward each end. The N. end appears to be slightly brighter than the S. end. The halo brightens rather abruptly to a bright, diffuse, oval nucleus which shares the same alignment as the halo. The Digital Sky Survey image shows a dark lane running the length of the galaxy along the E. side. Because none of the halo could be detected E. of the lane, the W. edge of the lane defined the visible E. edge of the galaxy. Visible with direct vision at 77x, it was best seen at 257x. The galaxy lies just S. of a comma shaped asterism of four 8th-11th magnitude stars. -- Optional related URLs: ** This observing log automatically submitted via the Web from: http://www.visualdeepsky.org/enter-log.html From Sstarryyy at aol.com Tue Jul 10 14:50:08 2007 From: Sstarryyy at aol.com (Sstarryyy at aol.com) Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2007 14:50:08 EDT Subject: (IAAC) Obj: NGC 5740, NGC 5746 - Inst: 10.1" f/4.5 Newtonian reflector Message-ID: _www.asktheastronomer.blogspot.com_ (http://www.asktheastronomer.blogspot.com) From anonymous at sedna.atmob.org Mon Jul 16 20:34:22 2007 From: anonymous at sedna.atmob.org (anonymous at sedna.atmob.org) Date: 16 Jul 2007 20:34:22 -0400 Subject: (IAAC) Obj: NGC 5376, NGC 5389 - Inst: 10.1" f/4.5 Newtonian reflector Message-ID: <20070717003422.32515.qmail@sedna.atmob.org> ---- Observation Poster: Brent Reary Observer: Brent Reary Your skills: Intermediate (some years) Date/time of observation: 7/14/07 03:55 UT Location of site: Rolla, MO USA (Lat 37 57'N, Elev ) Site classification: Rural Sky darkness: 6.5 Seeing: 6 <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)> Moon presence: None - moon not in sky Instrument: 10.1" f/4.5 Newtonian reflector Magnification: 77x, 128x, 193x, 257x Filter(s): None Object(s): NGC 5376, NGC 5389 Category: External galaxy.
